Kiwi berry, tara vine, actinidia argruta issai

kiwi berryThe fleshy emerald green fruits are sweeter than common kiwi fruit.

The stems are rich in sap which is drinkable.

More compact in habit than other varieties of Baby Kiwi, 'Issai' also has the added benefit of being self fertile.

After flowering in June, small green fruits dotted white mature over the Summer ready for harvest late September / October.

Whilst the fruits are fairly small yield can be prolific - with a mature plant producing literally hundreds of fruits, and up to 1000 is not unusual. Smooth skinned, the fruits do not need peeling either.

Harvest late September / October.

Can stand temperatures as low as -25C (-13F), but once they start getting green in spring they don't handle night frosts well, and thus won't make fruit in exposed positions. Make sure to plant in a sunny position protected from those sprng frosts and ealry morning sun. Plants often get more damaged from quick defrosting than from the frost itself.
