Deer grass, Rhexia virginica

deer grassThis plant succeeds in wet soils but not in the pond. It is very sensitive to slugs, as well as being a favourite nibble for deer, according to Ken Fern (Plants for a future).

The leaves are eaten raw or cooked. A sweetish slightly acid taste. It makes a pleasant salad.

Roots can be used raw. They can be chopped and added to salads or used as a pleasant nut-like nibble.

A sour drink is made from the leaves and stems.

A tea made from the leaves and stems is used as a throat cleaner.
